Player Spotlight: knurft

This month, Mahjong Time is spotlighting the Dutch player Anneke Keyl (username: knurft)! Anneke is a seasoned and skilled MCR and Riichi competitor both live and online. Her aggressive play style has earned her 1st place in the 2011 Red Fives Tournament in Doetinchem, and 2nd place in the 2011 Cherry Blossom Tournament in Nijmegen. Regular readers may recognize her username from previous newsletters as she was the 1st place Winner of the June 2012 MCR GMT and September 2010 MCR GMT, and the 2nd place winner of the February 2012 MCR GMT! Mahjong Time got the chance to ask Anneke a few questions:

Q: How did you originally discover multiplayer Mahjong?
A: About 35 years ago I learned to play MJ. We played in the family and with friends. But because that is a style that nobody knows, I started MCR in 2006.

Q: How often do you play online?
A: Every day when possible.

Q: How long have you played at Mahjong Time?
A: Since 2007.

Q: What do you like the most about Mahjong Time?
A: You can play 24 hours a day. And you come to know a lot of nice people which you can meet in person at the international tournaments.

Q: Tell us more about yourself! What would other Mahjong Time players be surprised to know about you?
A: Due to all kinds of problems I cannot work anymore. As chronic pain patient it is nice you can play at night on MJ time. The only thing I am able to do is be a volunteer for the Jane Goodall foundation. That is the reason for my chimpanzee pictures. I write reports and newsletters for a sanctuary which takes care of infant chimpanzees. I very much like the mission of the foundation, so I am happy I still can do this work for them.

Q: Which style of Mahjong do you like best? Why is this your favorite?
A: I play MCR and Riichi. But I like MCR the most, I think I am more a bit of a gambler instead of playing defensive.

Q: What is better: playing live or playing online?
A: Playing live is always nicer. I play in a club every week, and then also with friends at home almost every week. On MJ time I can play every day and when I want.

Q: On the subject of online play, what kind of advice would you give to the online player?
A: Keep on playing and have fun.
