This month we are spotlighting a Dutch player, Eveline Broers (username: bros), a member who has been at Mahjong Time for over 4 years! Eveline is a very successful live tournament player,
having won many events! Among Eveline’s many achievements lie a Black Belt in RCR, and a Brown Belt with two black stripes in MCR. Eveline’s Mahjong Time profile also boasts a medal for
winning the Golden Dragon Trournament in 2005! Mahjong Time had the chance to ask Eveline a few questions:
Note: Some Mahjong Time players have controversial opinions about the randomness of tile distribution. In this interview, the topic of tile randomness is questioned. While we
disagree with Eveline and claim that the MJT system is completely random (read more here), we do not censor our player’s opinions because at MJT every-one's voice deserves to be heard.
Q: How did you originally discover multiplayer Mahjong?
I’ve been playing Mahjong for 20 years. It all began with friends at home. One day we heard about a real life
tournament in The Netherlands and we decided to join. There were about 24 players and we found out that there were a lot of ways to play Mahjong. Since that time we played according to the Dutch
Tournament Rules. In 2004 we heard about MCR and joined the first European Championchips in Nijmegen (Holland). The group mahjongaddicts in The Netherlands became bigger and bigger and Dees told us
about Mahjong Time. I became a member in 2006. Mahjongtime was quite different then, slow and there were a lot of upgrades before it became the way we know it now.
Q: How often do you play online?
I'm online every day. I dont like watching t.v. Once a week I play live at the Mahjong club in the town I live in. Our club has 30 members,
so that’s not bad. In the weekend we still play live Mahjong with friends.
Q: What do you like the most about Mahjong Time?
Mahjong Time is the best site to play Mahjong, that’s for sure. Still, I do have problems with the issues I complained
about in the past: not really random and very hard to get the black belt. New members often come as far in a few months as I came in 5 years.
Q: Tell us more about yourself! What would other Mahjong Time players be surprised to know about you?
I work as a teacher in the town I live in. I enjoy my work, but it's
busy and it's good to relax with MJTime. My husband and sons nearby and me on my laptop playing MJ feels good.
Q: Which style of Mahjong do you like best? Why is this your favorite?
I like playing MCR the best, but Richii is a good second. I also play live Richii tournaments. On
MJTime I played a few HK and Taiwaneese rounds, but I'm not very good at it.
Q: Looking back on your Mahjong Time experience, what would you say was your favorite tournament to play in?
I have no favourite MJTime tournaments. I don’t like
playing tournaments on MJTime because it isn’t random and most of the time lots of sps (self picks).
Q: What is better: playing live or playing online?
Playing live is the best there is. I play as many tournaments as possible. In The Netherlands we have about 10 to 12
tournaments a year and I have played in Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Denmark and Sweden as well. Its real nice to meet Mahjong players from all over the world, and very often I’ve sat
at a table and discovered I was playing with another MJTime player. That’s fun.
Q: On the subject of online play, what kind of advice would you give to the online player?
I cannot give a good advice to online players, but in general here’s my MJ
advice: keep your hand closed as long as possible.
